Indian Foreign Secretary part of CMAG group - Miadhu News, 7 Feb, 2016

Indian Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar will be part of the visiting Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG).

The CMAG delegation will arrive in the country last night.

Foreign media has reported that the CMAG delegation had arrived in the Maldives to urge the Government to engage in discussions with the opposition and strengthen the independent institutions of the country.

Commonwealth Secretariat’s Spokesperson said that the three-day Commonwealth mission will see excellent results. He added that the Commonwealth will assist in implement any measures recommended by the mission in order to strengthen the said institutions.

The Government had strongly maintained that the Commonwealth’s actions against the Maldives was at inappropriate levels. Additionally, the Government had warned of leaving the international body, if the interference did not abate.

Western media had consistently criticized the Government for the 13-year jail sentence on former President Mohamed Nasheed on terror charges. Indian media had criticized Maldives for the increasing friendship between Maldives and China.
