A group of Maldivian women is participating in the largest crafts fair in the world this year to showcase and promote local handicrafts.

Over 30 countries are participating in the Surajkund International Crafts Mela, organised by Surajkund Mela Authority & Haryana Tourism in India, which will be held until February 15.

Representing the Maldives at the fair is Association of Lady Entrepreneurs (ALE), which strives to promote and market handicrafts created by local women to international audiences. ALE submitted the products created by six of its members in the Mela.

Raheema Adam, president of ALE which features 68 members, said that their team had submitted a range of artwork and pieces created from recycled materials to the fair.

ALE was founded as a volunteer committee in 2014 to support and encourage women in the field of business. The 68 members currently registered at ALE are all professionals of the business industry.
