Joint 'DOSTI' Exercise by Indian Coastguard with Maldives and Sri Lanka

The Indian Coast Guard will be conducting twelfth edition of the joint exercise named “DOSTI-XII” with the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the Sri Lankan Coast Guard at Male, Maldives from 28-31 October 2014. The Joint Exercise – DOSTI between the Indian Coast Guard and MNDF was held for the first time in 1991, since then 11 editions of the exercise have taken place. Sri Lanka joined the 11th edition of exercise in 2012, thus making it a trilateral exercise.  

The aim of India-Maldives-Sri Lanka Tri-Lateral Exercise ‘DOSTI’ is to further fortify the friendship, enhance mutual operational capability, and exercise interoperability and to build cooperation between the Coast Guards of Maldives, India and Sri Lanka. The focus areas during Dosti-XII will be to exercise the important charter of Coast Guard duties, including Maritime Search and Rescue (M-SAR), Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), Marine Pollution Response (POLRES) and Anti-piracy operations. For the first time the exercise will also be viewed by representatives from maritime forces of Seychelles and Mauritius. 

Two ships from Indian Coast Guard, ICGS Samar and ICGS Rajdoot alongwith a Dornier aircraft, one ship from Sri Lankan CG, SLCG Samudura and two ships from MNDF CG, MCGS Huravee and Shaheed Ali will take part in the exercise. These ships will practise responding to actual emergencies of Search and Rescue, Medical evacuation and Pollution Control response at Sea which will further enhance the ability of each Coast Guard to attend to real emergencies at sea.

The Director General of Indian Coast Guard, Vice Admiral Anurag Thapliyal is in Male’ to oversee the conduct of the exercise. An alumnus of the Naval War College, Newport, USA and DSSC, Wellington, Vice Admiral Thapliyal took over his current assignment on 28 Feb 2013. He is a recipient of Ati Vishist Seva Medal and was awarded Bar to Ati Vishist Seva Medal in 2014.    

Indian Coast Guard Ship Samar, the first advanced off-shore patrol vessel of this class, was designed indigenously and built by M/s Goa Shipyard Limited. The ship is fitted with most advanced equipment with state of art technology. The Commanding Officer of ICGS Samar is Deputy Inspector General S Paramesh. Indian Coast Guard Ship Rajdoot is high speed craft (HSC), built indigenously by G.R.S.E. Kolkata and is fitted with most advanced equipment. CO of ICGS Rajdoot is Commandant Anupam Rai. The ICG Dornier is commanded by Commandant Kimlay Bhutia.
