High Commissioner meets the First Batch of ICCR Scholars for 2014-15

India attaches the highest importance to its relations with the Maldives and is committed to cooperate with the Maldives in its developmental efforts. India is the largest developmental partner of Maldives especially in the human resource development and health sectors.

The Government of India has provided 74 civilian scholarships for 2014-15 in prestigious Indian institutions of learning to Maldivian nationals who wish to pursue their studies in India under various schemes viz.

ICCR scholarship - General Scholarship Scheme, Commonwealth Scholarship Scheme, Aid to Maldives; SAARC Scholarship Scheme; ITEC Programme; TCS Colombo Plan; Medical Courses (MBBS and Masters Degree in Medicine). Under the ICCR Scholarships, ITEC and Technical Cooperation Scheme of Colombo Plan programme, all expenditure, including the international air passages, board and lodging, internal transport, etc. in India of the candidates selected, are borne by Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India.

High Commissioner of India H.E. Mr. Rajeev Shahare met a group of 10 ICCR Scholars on 26 June 2014 at the Chancery who will be departing on 29 June and 5 July 2014 to pursue their higher studies in India.

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship offer includes all university level under-graduate and post-graduate courses in Arts, Science, Engineering, Commerce, Business Administration and Law. The response to the Indian offer has been overwhelming.

The grant of 39 scholarships every year to Maldivian students is an important positive step forward in strengthening and promoting our cultural ties with Maldives, and it also adds another new dimension to the already warm and friendly relations between the two countries, based on mutual trust and understanding.

Out of the 39 ICCR Scholarships, so far 17 Maldivian nationals have been offered admission in Indian Universities/Colleges, viz.

  • 2 admissions in Electrical & Electronics/Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering in National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra;
  • 4 admissions in B.Sc (Biotech/Home Science/Mathematics from Pune University/Punjab Agricultural University/ Acharya Nagarjuna University, Hyderabad;
  • 7 admissions in Commerce stream (2 admissions in B.Com(Hons) from Osmania University; 4 admissions in B.Com from Pune University/ Rosary College of Commerce & Arts, Goa; 1 admission in BBA from Pune University.
  • 4 admissions in Arts stream (B.A./LLB from Osmania University; BA(Hons) Sociology from Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi, B.A. from Pune and Osmania University.

 

Remaining 22 scholarships are under process and would be issued soon.
