Bilateral Projects

India has assisted Maldives in several of its developmental initiatives. The following projects stand as hallmarks of the bilateral relationship:

Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH)

IGMH is the most visible symbol of India’s assistance to the Maldives. During former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi's visit to Male' in February 1986, it was agreed to establish a medical complex in Male' with Indian assistance. Accordingly, the 200-bed hospital was established and dedicated to the memory of late Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi in April, 1995 by former Prime Minister Shri Narasimha Rao. IGMH is the first and largest government healthcare facility in Maldives, built with Indian assistance. During its initial years, India also provided 72 doctors/paramedics and nurses to assist Maldives in the management and running of the Hospital. Today, IGMH, with its state-of-the-art facilities, is the premier institute in Maldives providing health services to its citizens. The major renovation which was carried out with support of Govt of India at cost of INR 52 crore was completed and was dedicated to the people of Maldives on 17th March 2019 by Smt. Sushma Swaraj, Minister of External Affairs of India.

Faculty of Engineering Technology (FET)

During Prime Minister VP Singhs's visit to Male in June, 1990, India agreed to assist Maldives to set up its own Institute of Technical Education. The foundation stone for the Maldives Institute of Technical Education (MITE) was laid by President Gayoom in July, 1993. Construction of MITE was completed and handed over to the Government of Maldives in September, 1996. MITE, was later renamed as Faculty of Engineering Technology (FET), has a capacity to train several hundred students a year in various technical/vocational disciplines and is one of the leading technical institutes in the country.

India-Maldives Friendship Faculty of Hospitality & Tourism Studies

The foundation stone for the Faculty was jointly laid by Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee and President Gayoom during the former's visit to Maldives in September, 2002. The eight-storey building, which is built with the latest equipments/infrastructure for a hospitality institute, was handed over by External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid on February 20, 2014. The institute, with a capacity to accommodate more than 200 full-time students, will be a pioneering institute in training Maldivians students in tourism studies.

National College for Police and Law Enforcement (NCPLE)

With GoI grant funding of INR 222.98 Crore, NCPLE, Addu City is the single-largest grant project executed by India in the Maldives. The project was inaugurated by EAM Dr S. Jaishankar during his visit in March 2022.
