Press Release:Inauguration of Emergency & Trauma Unit at B. Dharavandhoo Health Centre on 28 September, 2022. (English)


 

On 28th September 2022, Emergency & Trauma Unit at B. Dharavandhoo Health Centre was inaugurated. The project is implemented by Ministry of Health of Maldives under the cash grant projects scheme of the Government of India in Maldives. The total contribution by GoI for the project is around MVR 7.5 million.

During the official visit of former External Affairs Minister (EAM) Late Smt. Sushma Swaraj to Maldives on 17-18 March 2019, EAM announced a financial grant support of MVR 106 million to Maldives for important bilateral projects related to socio-economic development, particularly creation of infrastructure in the education, health or community development sectors. Under the Cash Grants project scheme,  the total 18 project proposals were approved. “Establishing Emergency Medical Services at B. Dharavandhoo Health Centre” was one of these projects.

The objective of the project is as follows:-

  1. Establish Emergency Medical Services at atoll health facilities, equipped to provide emergency and trauma care for the population.
  2. To upgrade health services and strengthen the capacity of health facilities to provide emergency medical services at selected geographical areas of the Maldives.
  3. To link the upgraded health facilities with the national disaster response plans network and utilize the health facilities within the local and national disaster plans.
  4. The scope of the project was to provide emergency healthcare to patients who have life-threatening injuries/ illness.

High Commissioner Munu Mahawar, in his remarks at the event, stated that “India Maldives development partnership has witnessed a huge growth. It is truely comprehensive - it covers infrastructure projects; smaller community development project; and training & capacity building". He mentione the close cooperation between two countries during the COVID19 pandemic. He also highlighted the contribution of hundreds of Indian medical professionals – doctors, nurses & paramedics, who are working in Maldives, to strengthen the Health Services of Maldives, besides invaluable role in strengthening the bonds of friendship between our two countries.

India Maldives Health Cooperation is one of the strongest pillars of our bilateral partnership. The IGMH is a shining example of it. Recently, in March 2022, during the visit of EAM Dr. S Jaishankar to Addu, the Vilunu Drug Detox and Rehabilitation Centre was inaugurated. Under High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs), India is also supporting, establishing a Speech Therapy Unit in Kulhudhufushi Hospital,  prosthetics and orthotics manufacturing workshop- Hulhumale' Hospital and Mental Health Centre at Addu Equatorial Hospital. India is also supporting Cancer Hospital in Laamu under highly concessional Line of Credit through EXIM Bank of India.
