CII Partnership Summit

Country Session on Maldives

A special Country Session on Maldives will form part of this year’s CII Partnership Summit being held from 13 – 15, 2021 over a virtual platform.

The Partnership Summit is a premier business event organised annually by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), India’s apex Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with the Indian Ministry of Commerce & Industry. It brings together several international leaders, heads of  Multilaterals, Global CEOs as also think tanks and academicians sharing their perspectives through various sessions.

The Maldives country session is one of only 8 such country-specific sessions being organised as part of the Partnership Summit. It is a recognition of the growing trade and commercial ties between India and Maldives. It also reflects the interest of businesses on both sides for mutually beneficial collaborations.

Bilateral trade is set to cross USD 300 million in 2021, which will be the highest-ever trade figure registered by the two countries yet. Since 2020, India is Maldives’ second largest trade-partner with a 13% market share and largest source market for Maldives tourism with a 23% market share.

The cargo vessel service which commenced in September 2020 has been a game-changer for bilateral trade. It also is a key enabler for exports of MSMEs in India. High Commission of India is exploring niche markets for Maldivian fish/tuna exports to the Indian market.

The expanding India-Maldives development partnership has further accelerated the growth in trade ties. India-supported 9 large infrastructure projects, 40-odd grant projects across island communities have contributed to rejuvenation of the Maldivian economy after the pandemic-triggered lull.

Minister of Economic Development Uz. Fayyaz Ismail will deliver the Keynote Address at the Special Maldives Country Session. The session will also be addressed by High Commissioner of India to Maldives Munu Mahawar and High Commissioner of Maldives to India Dr. Hussain Niyaaz.

The session will feature sharing of experiences by top executives of 5 Indian companies active in the Maldives viz. the Taj Hotels, State Bank of India, Afcons Infrastructure, Atmosphere Group and Sri Avantika. Ministry of Economic Development will also share insights on the ‘Economic Outlook and Investment Opportunities in the Maldives'.

Indian companies active in sectors of Hospitality, Pharmaceuticals, Construction, Tourism, Fisheries, Education, Engineering, Electronics, Food processing etc will participate in this event to gain insights about doing business with the Maldives.

The Session will be held on 15th December from 1430-1530 hrs (Maldives time).
