Press Release on Visit of Foreign Secretary to Maldives (November 8-10) 10 November

Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who is currently on an official visit to the Maldives, held a joint meeting with Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam, Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail and Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer to review progress on the India-Maldives development partnership.

The discussions highlighted the progress on the 8 Line of Credit Projects being implemented under USD 1.3 billion worth of Lines of Credit, extended by India to the Maldives. Foreign Secretary appreciated the support and involvement of these crucial Ministries in speeding up processes for smooth project execution. The Ministers expressed their satisfaction at the pace of work and were confident that 4 or 5 of the LoC projects would be inaugurated in the next 2 months. 

 Foreign Secretary called on former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. He appreciated the valuable contribution of Former President Gayoom in shaping the robust India-Maldives ties in earlier decades.  Foreign Secretary wished Former President Gayoom and his family good health.

In his interactions with Mr. Imran Abdulla, Leader of Adhaalath Party & Home Minister, Foreign Secretary acknowledged his party’s contribution as a coalition partner of President Solih’s Government in the success of the India-Maldives bilateral partnership. Foreign Secretary also met with Mr Qasim Ibrahim, leader of the Jumhooree Party and had discussions on mutual interest including the economic recovery of the Maldives.

Foreign Secretary also met with the leadership of the Opposition Progressive-Congress Coalition. Foreign Secretary’s outreach across party lines was to highlight the traditions of democracy that India and the Maldives cherish, and the strength and resilience of our ties which has stood the test of time, and deepened over the years.

India attaches the highest importance to its relationship with the Maldives which rests on the bedrock of historical ties, shared values of democracy and the rule of law, and people-to-people contacts. Foreign Secretary’s visit has served to reinforce these aspects of our bilateral partnership and will further consolidate the close and friendly relations between India and Maldives.
