India to extend humanitarian relief to Maldives for Pandemic COVID-19

As a humanitarian gesture, Government of India will provide immediate assistance to the Government of Maldives to deal with the COVID-19 situation which has been characterized as a Pandemic by WHO.

India is sending a large Composite COVID-19 medical relief team tomorrow to assist Maldives health authorities to deal with the evolving situation.   The team comprises pulmonologists, anesthetists, physicians and lab-technicians  who will work closely with their Maldivian counterparts.

India will also gift essential medicines to deal with COVID-19 to the Government of Maldives in the next few days.  Despite temporary export ban  on these medicines, Government of India will provide these medicines as a special goodwill gesture to the Government and the people of Maldives.

These humanitarian gesturesare a concrete example of India’s  “Neighbourhood First” and the Maldives “India First” policy in action.   India has historically been the first responder to humanitarian crises in Maldives.   In the context of COVID-19, Government of India evacuated 7 Maldivian nationals on 02 Februaryand the remaining   2 nationals on 27 February from Wuhan.

On the health front, India also provided 30,000 doses of Measles vaccines within 72 hours of the request made in January this year.
